Facebook Messenger Kids app gets Sleep Mode

YouTube Kids is introducing new features that will give parents greater control over the content their children can access while using the app. The parents have all the controls of the app using the Settings app on their own Facebook account.

During those "off times", the kids will not be able to send or receive messages in the chat app, play with the camera, engage in video calls or receive any sort of notifications of the app. Any attempt to open Messenger Kids will be met with a message telling the child the app is in sleep mode and that they should come back later.

However, before enforcing such a feature, Facebook urges all the parents to have conversations with their children. The sleep mode in Messenger Kids will allow parents to set predetermined "off times" in the app on the device. Go to the Facebook app and tap on to the Child's app from the profile section.

"Set the times you want the app to turn off for your child". You will be allowed to create different settings for weekdays and weekends.

What do you think of the idea of Messenger Kids in general? For more guidance and resources, visit our Parents Portal at facebook.com/safety/parents. It is meant to be a tool for parents to check their kid's contacts list and what are they texting about, but also to be a safe space for children to learn about the digital world.

On the other hand, Facebook claims that very little data is being collected in the Messenger Kids app and that the data is being collected for operational purposes or to ensure a good experience within the app. Still, some parents found disturbing videos were making it into the app and were viewable because they were not caught by the human curators.

This year, YouTube Kids will roll out three new parental control options.

Parents provided feedback to Facebook regarding Messenger Kids that controls to make the app inaccessible during times like dinner or bedtime.
