President Trump to "Get involved" in Russian Federation investigation

Special Counsel Robert Mueller discussed issuing a subpoena for President Trump during a meeting in early March with Trump's lawyers, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Mr Trump's lawyers insisted during the meeting that the President was under no obligation to face questions by federal investigators in relation to the Russian Federation inquiry, the Washington Post reported.

Caputo, who has a background as a political operative in the US and Russian Federation, told the magazine he expected to be asked about his time as an aide with the campaign, his previous work in Russian Federation in the 1990s, and his connections to GOP operative Roger Stone and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort during the meeting.

Cobb has been the point person for the President Donald Trump's White House regarding special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Mueller's prosecutors and Trump's lawyers have been negotiating the terms of a voluntary interview, but Mueller is now threatening a subpoena if Trump does not commit to the session. Several Trump advisers and associates, including his former lawyer Dowd, are said to be opposed to having Trump meet with the special counsel.

The last president to be issued a subpoena while in office was Bill Clinton as part of the Monica Lewinsky investigation in 1998.

Yet if Mueller attempts to force Trump to testify under subpoena - as many legal analysts suspect could happen - the sources familiar with the thinking of Trump's legal team say they believe Trump could successfully challenge the subpoena all the way to the Supreme Court.

Additional reporting from Newsy affiliate CNN.

At about 9:30 on Wednesday, Trump tweeted again, quoting a former U.S. attorney who says such questions are an intrusion into the Constitutional powers of the president to fire anyone.

Others, including members of Trump's legal team, said the Nixon case refers to document production, not physical testimony.

According to the list, the questions range from Trump's motivations for firing FBI Director James Comey a year ago to contacts Trump's campaign had with Russians. "No questions on Collusion", Trump wrote on Twitter.

And even if Mueller's team chose to subpoena Trump as part of the investigation, he could still fight it in court or refuse to answer questions by invoking his Fifth Amendment protection from self-incrimination. Mr. Mueller has already secured an indictment of Mr. Manafort on federal charges, including money laundering, tax fraud and making false statements, and has extracted a guilty plea from Mr. Manafort's top aide, Rick Gates, on related charges. Another question asks what the president may have known about a possible attempt by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to set up a back channel with Russian Federation before Trump's inauguration.

One question asks whether there were any efforts to reach out to Flynn "about seeking immunity or possible pardon" ahead of his guilty plea a year ago. We now know that Mueller picked up the investigation, ran with it and ultimately prosecuted and convicted Flynn.
