Iran to withdraw from nuclear deal if United States pulls out

Iran remains defiant towards USA -led efforts to make changes to the nuclear deal.

China and Russian Federation also signed the deal.

Iran warned Thursday it will quit a landmark nuclear deal if President Donald Trump pulls the United States out of the accord, while also criticising European states over "concessions" to the Americans.

Trump has given the European signatories a May 12 deadline to fix what he calls the "terrible flaws" in the deal, threatening to effectively pull Washington out by refusing to extend waivers on US sanctions if they do not do so.

"If the United States withdraws from the nuclear deal, then we will not stay in it", Ali Akbar Velayati, foreign policy adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was quoted as saying by the state television website.

"In contrast, the USA has consistently violated the nuclear agreement, especially by bullying others from doing business with Iran", he said. It claims the country's nuclear programme was more advanced than it indicated at the time.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on May 3 warned against ditching the JCPOA if it could not be replaced with a viable alternative. "So I think we should separate things".

As the deadline looms for Trump to sign the waiver for the JCPOA, which caps Iran's nuclear enrichment capability in exchange for economic sanctions relief, Tehran is still warning the USA against pulling out.

"I don't know what the USA president will decide on the 12th of May", Macron told reporters while on a visit to Australia.

He said thousands of pages of material, have been obtained by Israel which showed Iran had deceived the world by denying it had ever sought nuclear weapons.

Top aides are not seeking to talk Mr. Trump out of withdrawal because he seems intent on it, a second White House official said.

"Every detail PM Netanyahu presented yesterday was every reason the world came together to apply years of sanctions and negotiate the Iran nuclear agreement - because the threat was real and had to be stopped", Kerry wrote on Tuesday.

Until recent weeks, Iranian officials had suggested the country could stand by its commitments under the deal - which curbed uranium enrichment in return for sanctions relief - in the face of a US withdrawal, as long as other signatories that include France, the U.K., Germany, Russia and China remain supportive.

A British government spokesman also expressed support for the Iran nuclear pact, saying the IAEA inspection regime "is one of the most extensive and robust [ones] in the history of global nuclear accords". Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called into question the legitimacy of the U.S. and Israel making moves to have the deal scrapped after it gained the consensus of five world powers in 2015 in what was widely regarded at the time as a significant diplomatic victory in the worldwide community.
