Haryana Waqf Board submits lists of 19 encroached mosques

Haryana CM Manohar Lal khattar, who is now on a foreign visit, on Sunday had indirectly supported the Hindu vigilante groups, who on a couple of times had disrupted prayers being offered at open spaces.

Responding to law and order situation in Gurgaon, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said there has been an increase in cases of offering namaz in open.

Days after the Hindu outfits based in Gurgaon obstructed the Muslims from reading their customary Friday namaz in the open, the representatives of the Muslims community along with a group of residents on Tuesday morning met the divisional commissioner in Gurgaon. Hours later, he also added that the police is resposible for maintaining law and order in the area.

According to a report by CNN-News18, the Waqf Board in a letter to district administration said Muslims in and around Gurugram face a shortage of mosques to offer prayers. "The properties including mosques and the land owned by the board are either disputed or have been encroached upon by the people", Waqf Board letter said. This has compelled the devotees to occupy public spaces including parks to offer Friday prayers. "Haryana Waqf board will bear the cost of fix work and staff appointments of these 20 mosques once vacated", reads the Haryana Waqf Board letter.

"We have asked administration to ensure all necessary arrangement so that people can use these 22 mosques lands for prayers with full protection", he said.

The Gurgaon Police spokesperson, Ravindra Kumar, said they received no complaint from any side.

The right-wing groups have been saying they would continue their protest if the administration did not stop "unauthorised" prayers at public places.

"Occasionally if someone needs to read the namaz, he has the religious freedom to do so but one can't read namaz anywhere in the open, with the intention of grabbing land".

He said during the "Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan" which was launched by the state government on the occasion of Dr B R Ambedkar's birth anniversary on April 14 and ended today, a number of programmes were organised at district, block and tehsil levels to apprise the people about various welfare schemes of the centre and state governments. They also raised slogans like "Jai Shri Ram" and "Bangladeshi wapas jao" when they disrupted the congregations. There were disruptions to namaz at Wazirabad, Atul Kataria Chowk, Cyber Park, Bakhtawar Chowk and at South City, on Friday last.
