Kilauea Volcano Alert: New Areas at Risk For Toxic Gas

The Kilauea volcano has forced about 2,000 people to flee and destroyed dozens of homes. Distant communities such as Hilo, about 30 miles away, could get a dusting of ash. The lava ranges within the lake are dropping as a result of lava is spewing out of cracks elsewhere within the mountain, reducing the stress that stuffed the lava lake. He and other native Hawaiians say the plant desecrates traditional beliefs and angers Pele, the goddess of fire, who lives at the summit crater.

Meantime, if rock and other sediment have fallen inward, blocking the steam that's being created, intense pressure builds up. Ige said crews at the plant near the lava outbreak accelerated the removal of stored flammable fuel with safety in mind.

Charles Mandeville, volcano hazards coordinator for the US Geological Survey said: "If it goes up, it will come down".

Rajeev Nair, the professor at the university running the course, said he and 12 students still plan on visiting Hawaii at the end of May to study the principles of volcanology.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's decision to close Friday due to the risk of an explosive eruption will discourage travelers, said Janet Coney, the office manager at Kilauea Lodge, an inn in Volcano.

Officials with the agency wouldn't estimate the likelihood of such an explosion, but called it a "distinct possibility".

A summit explosion could also release ash, steam and sulfur dioxide gas.

"If you're within several miles of the summit of the volcano, of the lava lake, then you would be subject to falls of marble sized rocks, ash, finer grain material. and if you're beyond that say you're 10 miles, 15, 20 downwind, you could experience fine ash floating from the sky like snow, ' he added".

Officials don't expect a possible explosion to be deadly as long as people stay out of the closed park. Scientists say a massive explosion would shut down air traffic and put people nearby in danger.

"This volcano is very unique and we're lucky that it's not as risky as other volcanoes and we're able to go and see it without having it pose a threat to our safety", said Holowath.

The first steam-driven explosive eruptions on Kilauea in almost a century may soon begin, dusting downwind communities with ash that is an eye and respiratory irritant, observatory scientists said.

Currently, there are no changes in the itinerary, said Nair, but that could change depending on further activity.

As soon as the lava drops, rocks that had been superheated might fall into the lava tube. And once the lava drops below the water table, water hits rocks that are as hot as nearly 2,200 degrees (1,200 degrees Celsius) and flashes into steam.

"We're learning about how the lava is impacting upon lifelines like water supply and electricity". The last time that happened was in 1924, it blasting rock and ash more than five miles into the air. And the dropped rocks hold that steam in until it blows.

The small, aptly named city of Volcano, Hawaii, inhabitants 2,500, is about Three miles (4.83 kilometers) from the summit.

"There've been both electricity outages and water outages in Hawaii and in Auckland we have a lot of buried infrastructure so how far the heat travels into the ground is of interest".
