Jupiter's icy Moon Europa Shoots Water Plumes Into Space

Recent evidence obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope was what prompted scientists like Jia to take another look at data from Galileo's journey into Jupiter, which dates back to 1997 when it is suspected that the spacecraft flew through a plume of water that was erupting from Europa. "It's worth noting that the scientific journal Nature Astronomy just reported that the Galileo mission, back in 1997, flew through a water plume on Europa 1,000 kilometers thick", Culberson said during an appropriations subcommittee markup in the House.

For years, planetary scientists have argued over whether Europa might be spitting water into space, as Saturn's moon Enceladus does. Computer simulations created by Xianzhe Jia, a space scientist at the University of MI, showed that a 120-mile-high geyser erupting from a relatively warm patch on Europa would create precisely the same readings. That's another requirement for life that might be checked off the list - in fact, some scientists theorize that life on Earth started in the deep sea vents that erupt in geysers.

They layered the magnetometry and plasma wave signatures into new 3D modelling developed at the University of MI in the USA, which simulated the interactions of plasma with solar system bodies. "We also pulled out the plasma wave data from Galileo, and surprisingly, around the same time, the plasma wave showed anomalous emissions".

The team reconstructed the spacecraft's path to pinpoint the plume's location on the moon's surface. NASA's Europa Clipper, scheduled to launch between 2022 and 2025, will execute a few dozen Europa flybys.

"There now seem to be too many lines of evidence to dismiss plumes at Europa", said Robert Pappalardo, Europa Clipper project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena.

In addition, "to make sense of the observations, we had to really go for sophisticated numerical modeling" techniques, he told Space.com. The mission, called the Europa Clipper, aims to closely observe Europa, a distant moon of Jupiter, and could answer lingering questions about whether life exists elsewhere in the solar system.

If the plumes had shed steam from the icy ocean of Europa, the mission could take samples of the liquid and particles of frozen dust to verify the theory announced today. Other researchers revisited the data as they planned for future NASA missions to revisit the planet, creating a computer simulation of the conditions when Europa might eject water into its atmosphere.

Europa is considered among the prime candidates for life in our solar system, but is not the only one.

To figure out the puzzle, Melissa A. McGrath, a senior scientist at the SETI Institute, turned to data from the Galileo mission, reports Kenneth Chang at the New York Times.

The case for a giant plume of water vapor wafting from Jupiter's potentially life-supporting moon Europa just got a lot stronger. That's why NASA has already spent years planning the Europa Clipper to investigate the moon for liquid. What they found is that magnetometer readings and radio signals also showed anomalies when the craft flew over the area of the purported plumes determined by Hubble. "So the ocean of Europa is venting into outer space".

"If plumes exist, and we can directly sample what's coming from the interior of Europa, then we can more easily get at whether Europa has the ingredients for life", Pappalardo continues.

U.S. legislators this month TO approved a bill that would give $US545 million to the Europa Clipper mission.
