Facebook suspends 200 apps for misusing data, privacy probe continues

Do you think it's time governments took legal action against Facebook for these constant data leak issues?

In 2014, Facebook revealed a policy change restricting access to client information, however, noticed that a few applications still had the information it had acquired before the modification.

Apparently, even the 200 suspended apps are expected to be further investigated via interviews and RFI requests. A first of its kind in the market, the program provides financial payouts to anyone who reports genuine cases of data collection that go against Facebook's data policies. Their conscientiousness, agreeableness and neurotic-ism are forthright for anybody. In addition, they will also tell individuals by means of this site. New Scientist's report also claims that even if user's names are obliterated, the information can easily re-identify the user.

The people behind the data sets were David Stillwell and Michal Kosinski at the University of Cambridge's The Psychometrics Centre.

Grabbing the login details from GitHub granted access to the sensitive data "in less than a minute" and has, in fact, been publicly visible on the website for the past four years.

Researchers working with the myPersonality project, including app creator David Stillwell, shared anonymous samples from the project with other researchers around the world, according to myPersonality. Reports now claim that "myPersonality" lost its objective of being just an academic project and instead dealt with commercial companies too.

As part of its inquiry, the committee has been investigating allegations of the improper use of data for 87 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by President Donald Trump's 2016 US election campaign.

The app called "myPersonality" was created by University of Cambridge researchers.

Facebook suspended the app on April 7, after it accessed the "Big Five" personality scores of 3.1 million users, and two million status updates from over 150,000 users, including details about age, gender and relationship status from 4.3 million people.

While the Cambridge Analytica scandal brought a lot of trouble to Facebook, it seems that this was just the tip of the iceberg for the social media platform.

As a part of a wider investigation, myPersonality app website has now been taken down by Facebook, and the publicly available credentials are non-functional.
