Andy Warhol's Magazine Is Closing Down

Interview, the celebrity interview magazine co-founded in 1969 by gay pop-artist Andy Warhol, officially shut down today after facing two unresolved lawsuits from former executives who claimed the magazine stiffed them for enormous sums.

It's perhaps no surprise that under Warhol and Sischy, many LGBTQ figures graced Interview covers over the years, including Fran Lebowitz, Lily Tomlin, Truman Capote, Jodie Foster, Divine, George Michael, and Warhol himself. In 2008, the publication went through another shift when co-editorial directors Fabien Baron and Glenn O'Brien took over.

A magazine founded by Andy Warhol is to close business after nearly 50 years of bringing cutting edge pop culture to readers.

The magazine also reportedly had trouble paying the rent for its SoHo offices in New York City this last February, resulting in its staff temporarily being locked out until the matter was resolved.

In addition, Jane Katz, a former associate publisher, claims Interview owes her $230,000 in unpaid fees and that she was also unjustly fired, and the former president of the magazine Dan Ragone also stated that Interview owes him $170,000.

Longtime employee Deborah Blasucci is suing the company under claims that she was sacked for making too much money, and three other female employees have accused creative director Karl Templer of "overstepping professional lines", though Templer denies these accusations.

A source told Observer the publication is liquidating its assets through Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

The wonderful interviews I got to do as a contributing editor for #interviewRussia and Interview Germany... Peter Brant owns the magazine, while his daughter Kelly is the president.

Austen Tosone, until now an assistant editor at Interview, wrote on Twitter that her six months at the magazine was "certainly a insane ride".

Recent examples of this include Seth Rogen's conversation with rapper 21 Savage, Janet Mock's freewheeling interview with Kim Kardashian and a chat with the choreographer of Childish Gambin's This Is America. The early years had a decidedly queer aesthetic, with divas like Diana Ross, Cher, and Madonna on multiple issues, as well as cult favorites like Shelley Duvall, Liza Minnelli, Annie Lennox, and Grace Jones getting their due.
