Celebrities react to Harvey Weinstein's arrest

A statement from the NYPD reads, "Today, at the NYPD's 1st Precinct, Harvey Weinstein was arrested, processed and charged with Rape, Criminal Sex Act, Sex Abuse and Sexual Misconduct for incidents involving two separate women".

The initial reporting on Weinstein triggered a wave of sexual abuse allegations from scores of women, including Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek, and led to him being fired from The Weinstein Company's board and sued by New York's attorney general.

"This defendant used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually", Manhattan Assistant Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon said in court. Weinstein raised his eyebrows as he heard it.

Weinstein has repeatedly denied accusations of non-consensual sex. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, didn't elaborate further on the denials Friday, saying he wasn't there "to try the case" at this point.

Weinstein agreed to post the cash bail, CBC noted, surrender his passport, wear an electronic monitor, and not travel beyond the states of CT and NY.

It was women sharing their experiences with Weinstein that made way for more victims to come forward with allegations against powerful men in the entertainment industry and beyond, revealing systems that seemed to, for years, insulate those men from any repercussions and silence their victims.

"You sorry, Harvey?" the media shouted as Weinstein walked into the courthouse earlier today. Weinstein mildly shook his head and softly said "no".

He will reportedly face criminal charges of rape and criminal sexual act.

The woman, Lucia Evans, (LOO'-sha) was among the first to speak out about the film producer.

The rape charge relates to a woman whose identity remains unknown. A court complaint says Weinstein raped her in a Manhattan hotel in 2013.

Deponent states that he is informed by a person known to the District Attorney's Office that on one occasion between June and September of 2004, in the daytime hours, inside of 375 Greenwich Street in the County and State of NY, defendant forced informant to engage in oral sexual conduct, to wit, defendant grabbed the back of informant's head forcing her head downward and forcing her mouth onto his penis. Film actress Rose McGowan said Weinstein raped her in 1997 in Utah, "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992 and Norwegian actress Natassia Malthe said he attacked her in a London hotel room in 2008.

"I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him..."

"I was so terrified of him", she told Vanity Fair. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance had been under enormous public pressure to bring a criminal case against Weinstein.

Weinstein's rep released a statement following the publication of the New Yorker expose, denying the accusations against him. A grand jury has been hearing evidence in the case for weeks.

CBS News contributor Jodi Kantor is one of the New York Times reporters who broke the Weinstein story, along with the New Yorker's Ronan Farrow. That investigation is in its preliminary stages. On Thursday, eight women accused Morgan Freeman of unwanted touching and harassment, which has caused Visa to suspend its marketing campaigns with the actor.

London's Metropolitan Police and Los Angeles prosecutors have said they are reviewing accusations of sexual assault against him.

Other actresses who have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct include Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek. "I hope in this case it works. None of this was consensual", she said.

After talking and writing about the case for so long, including in a recent memoir, "Brave", McGowan, 44, said it came as a huge surprise when news of the legal case finally came.

"We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you", she tweeted Friday morning. She is not one of the victims in the case on Friday; hers was still pending, officials said.

The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the investigation.
