DHS secretary says she's unaware Russia wanted Trump to win

The U.S. intelligence community concluded in a January 2017 report that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump and hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Asked by a reporter whether she had a reason to doubt the January 2017 assessment from the intelligence community, Nielsen said she did not believe she had seen a conclusion that Russian President Vladimir Putin preferred Trump over Clinton in his country's efforts to meddle in the election.

"We see them continuing to conduct foreign influence campaigns", Nielsen said, but added there was no evidence that Russian Federation had been targeting specific races.

Indeed, the ongoing investigation of Russia's meddling in the 2016 USA election has made it hard for Trump to wrap his arms around Putin. "The Russian effort was extensive, sophisticated, and ordered by President Putin himself for the goal of helping Donald Trump and hurting Hillary Clinton". "Russian goals included undermining faith in the USA democratic process and harming a candidate's electability and potential presidency".

Nielsen and other Trump administration officials briefed lawmakers on election security Tuesday morning in a classified setting to discuss overall threats to upcoming US elections and explain the steps the administration is taking to counter those threats.

The report was the first piece of public intelligence issued by the U.S. government on Russian meddling.

Several top members of the party said they are unsure whether Nielsen was being serious or simply playing politics when she said she was unaware of the intelligence community's conclusions.

Nielsen responded as though she had never heard of the assessment before.

Additionally, the steady drumbeat of news about Trump associates, near and far, entertaining Russian operatives before, during, and after the USA election have also made the prospect of the United States cozying up to Russia less likely. We've seen them simultaneously encourage people to go to that same protest on the other side. "I think what they are trying to do is to disrupt our belief and our own understanding of what's happening". "As the secretary reiterated - their intent was to sow discord in the American electoral process", the spokesman, Tyler Houlton, said.

"The Secretary has previously reviewed the Intelligence Community's assessment and agrees with it - as she stated today and previously".

Nielsen's comments come just days after the Senate Intelligence Committee announced it sided with the intelligence community in its findings on Russian interference.

"I know that the Intelligence Community can not serve our nation if facts are negotiable".

A similar conflict exists in Congress, where the Senate and the House Intelligence Committees have reached very different conclusions about Russia's intentions. They claimed in their report that the intelligence community didn't follow its best practices when it concluded Russian Federation favored Trump in the election.
