S.Korea says N.Korea committed to "complete" denuclearisation, summit with Trump

"Our government will do its part in carrying out the Panmunjom Declaration", Cho told reporters, referring to the agreement President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reached during their April 27 meeting.

Moon said both he and Kim had "agreed the June 12 North Korea-U.S. summit must be successfully held".

Kim also "expressed his fixed will on the historic DPRK-US summit talks", KCNA added, using the official abbreviation for North Korea.

"We're doing very well in terms of the summit with North Korea", Mr. Trump said at the White House. Under Trump, it is the United States that has become the rogue state, unwilling to listen to its allies whether the issue is trade, climate change or the destabilizing effect of moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Trump tweeted earlier Saturday that a summit with Kim, if it does happen, will likely take place on June 12 in Singapore as originally planned.

"We remain unchanged in our goal and will to do everything we can for peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and humankind, and we, broad-minded and open all the time, have the willingness to offer the USA side time and opportunity".

The Washington Post reported that Sung Kim, a former USA ambassador to South Korea, is leading the us delegation and met Sunday with North Korea's vice foreign minister, Choe Son Hui, citing sources it didn't identify.

She has also served as a nuclear negotiator and led the USA affairs division in the North Korean Foreign Ministry until being promoted to vice foreign minister this year. He urged Washington and Pyongyang to resolve their differences through "more direct and closer dialogue between their leaders".

On Sunday, a White House advance team is scheduled to depart via Japan for a round of planning meetings, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Saturday morning.

She also said it was up to the Americans whether they would "meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown".

When Moon was asked whether Kim supported the USA definition of denuclearization - which is an irreversible, verifiable giving-up of nuclear arms - Moon said that's up to Washington and Pyongyang to work out. Sputnik discussed the latest developments in US-North Korea relations with Jenny Town, the managing editor of monitoring group 38 North. "The path to complete denuclearisation and full peace was never going to be an easy one", Moon said.

He announced on Thursday that he was withdrawing from the scheduled June 12 meeting in Singapore, only to say on Friday that the summit might be back on.

In recent months, however, Chang said China has blatantly busted United Nations sanctions by its dealings with North Korea, which include Beijing allowing North Korean workers back into the country, China's investment in Pyongyang and President Xi Jinping providing gifts to Kim at the end of their summit in March. That's according to his South Korean negotiating partner, President Moon Jae-in, who met on Kim's request.

Sung, a South Korean born diplomat, is a former nuclear negotiator with North Korea and current US ambassador to the Philippines.

Photos of Kim and Moon embracing and shaking hands also appeared on the Sunday front page of state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun.

The delegation that entered North Korea on Sunday is more focused on the substance of the talks.

Moon's surprise meeting with Kim on Saturday shows he's willing to do what it takes to keep diplomacy on track and avoid a return to threats of war over North Korea's nuclear program. Some of them have done nothing but make sure the summit wouldn't happen since the day Trump shocked the world by accepting Kim's invitation to meet.
