Alberto makes historic brush up with Lake Michigan

The storm is predicted to make landfall between late Monday and early Tuesday in the Alabama Gulf Coast area, according to NHC.

The hurricane center said Sunday that a tropical storm warning was in effect from Bonita Beach, Florida, to the Mississippi-Alabama border. Expect similar conditions in North Alabama on Tuesday as the center of the storm moves overhead; a Flash Flood Watch is in effect though noon Wednesday. Isolated tornadoes were also possible over parts of Georgia and southeast Alabama.

In addition to parts of the southeastern US, the heavy rains and storm conditions could produce "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides" in Cuba, the NHC said.

Remnants of Alberto will have moved northeast of us, but rain chances will remain as another disturbance rolls through the area.

"The basic idea is that it's going to run out of real estate for it to strengthen" by picking up energy from the warm Gulf of Mexico waters, said Dan Petersen, a forecaster with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. On average, the Columbia area receives almost 45 inches of rain annually. "This is definitely a unsafe storm", said David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Along the Gulf Coast and Big Bend, some mandatory and some voluntary evacuations were underway Sunday after a forecast for a 2- to 4-foot storm surge. The storm spun up days before the formal June 1 start of the hurricane season.

"Alberto", which was actually 10 miles per hour too slow to be considered a hurricane, was well on its way Monday to blasting the southeastern corner of the U.S. The eye of the storm was less than 30 miles south-southwest from Panama City, Florida. However, showers and thunderstorms will make an appearance from Tropical Depression Alberto from the south and temperatures will be on a cooling trend throughout the rest of the week.

"I'm doing this because every time we have a hard rain, it floods at my house", resident Tommy Whitlock told the Associated Press.
