EU Brexit chief doubtful of UK border plan as time runs low

Michel Barnier also stated that Brussels would not be "intimidated" by Brexiteers who try to blame the bloc for not securing the Brexit deal they want.

Although, the cabinet is still split over how to manage customs arrangements with the European Union in the future, on June 7 the British government published its counter-proposal for a "backstop" arrangement to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

The prime minister has refused to guarantee her proposed Brexit "backstop" will end in December 2021, despite the date being stated as an expectation in a government negotiating paper.

The European Union's chief Brexit negotiator has dismissed Theresa May's "backstop" solution to the Northern Irish border problem warning that it would not be "feasible".

United Kingdom contractor Offshore Marine Management is urging members of parliament to consider the impact of Brexit on the offshore renewables industry ahead of the latest debate on the EU Withdrawal Bill next week. "That's probably a given", Mr Davis said."But what she (Mrs May) said today is exactly right that the White Paper will be published when it's ready, it's up to quality, and is exactly what we need to say".

Who supports it? Only a relatively small number of committed eurosceptics in Parliament regard this as their preferred result, but many MPs - particularly on the Tory benches - believe the Government should be preparing for the possibility of a "no deal" exit in order to strengthen the UK's hand in negotiations with Brussels.

The most contentious changes center on Britain's future economic relationship with the EU.

On Wednesday reporters asked Davis if he would quit if the backstop did not have his explicit approval, replying: "That's a question I think for the prime minister, to be honest".

Instead it would see Britain staying tied to the EU's customs union for up to another year after an nearly two-year transition period if there were any delay in implementing a Brexit deal.

The Republic of Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney said he looked forward to discussing the UK's proposal with Mr Barnier's team. "A people's vote must be held before March 29, 2019, to decide our country's future", the organization said in its roadmap.

Another paragraph clearly states the temporary customs arrangement will be "time-limited" and will come into force after the Brexit transition period ends in December 2020. Anthony Lewis of OMPA said: "Staying within the EEA could mitigate the additional costs, administration and risk to quick response presented by working with countries that require British workers to complete visa applications, and as such would give our skilled and experienced workers the continued opportunity to operate successfully in European waters".

The group's chair Mark Malloch Brown acknowledged a second poll could confirm the Leave vote, and pledged that Best For Britain would respect the result whichever way it went.

May's government is divided over two alternatives regarding which customs arrangement to seek with the European Union after the end of a transitional period created to bridge Britain out of the bloc, which ends in 2020.
