Valve releases a new and very improved chat client for Steam

Valve has released a beta for its all-new Steam chat with new features, including a revamped friend list and chat system. While in that mode, you can see your friends (and enemies) and chat just like normal, without so many people chatting at you that you spill your tea into your lap.

For PC gamers there are plenty of avenues to purchase titles digitally, yet the dominant platform most will use is Valve's Steam.

Valve is making it easier to chat with your friends while playing your favorite Steam games.

The new Steam Chat offers some great features that come as standard with other services.

It is easier to start a voice chat now to get everyone join the same channel within seconds of posting the voice chat link in group chat. You have the in-line media, the ability to create multiple text or voice channels in each group, and the ability to invite friends to a group with a link.it's nearly like someone at Valve opened Discord and chose to make the UI look more like Steams.

Valve's feeling the pressure from Discord (and other chat services) and an overhaul of the chat interface and functionality was long overdue.

Next comes the new group chats. All traffic will be sent through Stream servers rather than be directed individually to peers, meaning user IP address will remain private, keeping the possibility of network attacks minimal, as physical locations are masked.

This Steam Chat update looks a lot like Discord, another gaming-centric chat platform which has been called the "Slack for gamers."

Steam Chat is available to trial now and is in beta on both the desktop client and in your web browser.
