Proposal to Divide California Into Three States to Appear on November Ballot

California voters in November will decide whether they want their Golden State split into three.

In the memo from Alex Padilla, his office confirmed that Initiative: #1814, Related to the Division of California would appear on the "November 6, 2018, General Election ballot and all further signature verification can be terminated".

Cal 3, as this campaign is called, would create the states of Northern California, Southern California and a narrow central coast strip retaining the name California, as described on the website.

Proponents of the CAL 3 initiative submitted more than 402,468 valid signatures as of Tuesday, making it eligible for the November 6 general election ballot, according to the California Secretary of State's office. Southern California would include 12 counties, including areas as north as Madera and Fresno counties, Bakersfield, Riverside and San Diego. "All Californians deserve more from their state, and with Cal 3, more regional responsiveness and more meaningful results will create a promising future for everyone". So what would happen if they approve the three-Californias ballot measure?

Turning one state into three would create four new US senators, a move that would significantly boost Californians' influence in Washington.

"CAL 3" has no connection to efforts to have California secede from the United States.

California: This will be considered the new state which includes Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties.

A California split is a long shot, to say the least. "Three states will get us better infrastructure, better education and lower taxes", he said in an email to the newspaper.

Californians have talked about breaking up with themselves ever since California became a state in 1850.

Northern California, containing the 40 northern-most counties - including Sacramento and San Franciso - stretching from the OR border to Merced County.

The new ballot measure would create states with roughly equal populations and, compared with the six-state proposal, more comparable income levels.

"Assuming this measure is approved by voters and the federal government and allowed by the courts", the state writes, "all tax collections and spending by the existing State of California would end".

College students from Northern California who go to school in Los Angeles (and vice versa) would also be affected.

For Democrats, who already control California as a virtual one-party state, there's no upside, while Republicans have little to lose after watching their registration numbers fall in May behind those of voters with no party preference.
