Chandimal pleads not guilty to ball-tampering charge

Cricket's governing body said on Sunday that Chandimal had been charged for "breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct" - a rule which deals with altering the state of the ball.

The ICC's ruling comes following a standoff between Chandimal's Sri Lankan side and the officials on day three of the Test. As the West Indies players were waiting on the ground, the Sri Lankan team didn't turn up even as both umpires were waiting.

But the players eventually came onto the field at 10.50am, West Indies were officially given five extra runs and umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar oversaw the changing of the ball.

The ruling on Chandimal comes at an inopportune time for the Sri Lankan skipper who was his team's only shining light in the first innings following a sparkling unbeaten 119 in the first innings.

Sri Lanka on Saturday night said that it will defend the National cricket team over ball tampering allegations which surfaced in the West Indies.

Earlier in the day, Chandimal was charged by the worldwide cricket body in the aftermath of the high-voltage drama that took place during the third day of the Test.

Video evidence will be used in the hearing, which will also be attended by the match officials as well as members of the Sri Lanka team management.

In March this year, Australia were caught tampering with the ball in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Steve Smith, along with David Warner, was handed a one-year ban from both domestic and global cricket by Cricket Australia while batsman Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension for their involvement in the incident.

The tourists gathered on the boundary, but after further negotiations with Srinath and their coaching staff, Lahiru Kumara finally resumed his 14th over at 11.30am with a replacement ball selected by the West Indies batsmen.

That match was the only Test in the game's history to be forfeited after Pakistan refused to return to the field.

But an hour has gone and we are still no closer to the start of the third day's play as West Indies trail Sri Lanka by 135 runs with eight wickets in hand.

Opener Devon Smith fell for 61, having added only eight to his overnight half-century, while wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich followed up his century in the first Test with 55.
