Messi misses penalty as Iceland hold Argentina to draw

The on-going rivalry between Barcelona & Real Madrid, and moreover Messi vs Ronaldo has reached a new stage.

It was a massive moment in the game and a blow for Messi, particularly after his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo's set-piece sorcery for Portugal against Spain on Friday.

Jose Mourinho has said Lionel Messi is "only human", after the Argentina star missed a penalty and suffered a frustrating afternoon in his team's 1-1 draw with World Cup debutants Iceland.

Sergio Aguero scored an eye-catching opener for the two-time world champions in the 19th minute but it was nearly immediately cancelled out by Alfred Finnbogason, whose team then held on in the face of enormous pressure.

Messi looked furious as he led his team out for the second half but the Argentines still struggled to dominate. Both teams jockeyed for possessions, until halftime presided with both teams looking ahead carte blanche.

The Argentina captain's effort was saved by the keeper in the 1-1 draw in Moscow.

Argentina had pulled out of the pre-World Cup match against Isreal owing to rising protests and threats from Palestinians for the venue for the game was changed to Jerusalem from Haifa.

It was not until the 15th minute that Messi's shot from outside the goal area of Iceland was parried away by goalkeeper Hannes Thor Halldorsson. Messi unleashed a shot towards the goalkeeper's right but it was weak and at a saveable height and Halldorsson guessed it right and denied the best player in the world perhaps to add another feather to Iceland's cap.

Watch and find out. And to do that against one of the best teams in the world against the best player in the world, shows that we know something'.

Messi just missed a chance before Aguero opened the scoring, creating space on his left and ripping a shot into the goal. I think maybe afterwards you could think like that [about the excitement of facing Messi] but during the game that's not what you think about and it is eleven opponents and your ten team-mates.

Alfred Finnbogasson scored Iceland's first ever World Cup goal.

Social media also pointed out Messi's poor conversion rate when it comes to penalties. "I had a good feeling he would go that way".

Iceland would eventually hold on for a priceless point as Argentina got their campaign in Russian Federation off to a mediocre start.

However, Iceland, the smallest nation ever to qualify, refused to roll over, with midfielders Aron Gunnarsson, Emil Hallfredsson and Birkir Bjarnason grafting like troopers to double up on Messi and shut down the spaces Argentina were trying to work. They are next level but also take a look at his stats, how much does he run in every game?

They hit on the counter and gave the South Americans a scare when Bjorn Sigurdarson pounced on a loose ball only to rifle his shot just wide of the post.

"We're bluntly honest in our ability", coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said.
