Kane's dramatic stoppage-time goal gives England win over Tunisia

England are now in uncharted territory; they are in a land of positivity and confidence after Harry Kane's dramatic late victor secured a 2-1 victory against Tunisia in Volgograd to ensure a dream start to Russian Federation 2018.

The last time these two teams met opened the 1998 World Cup, a match England won 2-0.

Ineffective performances by Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli also hampered England, but Kane delivered when it mattered and Southgate's team can now prepare for a place in the knockout rounds.

One supporter tweeted: "The referee in this England Tunisia match is bad lol".

Russian media said authorities used planes in the months before the game to spray the area around the stadium, which is next to the massive Volga river, with a special substance deemed safe to humans and animals that is created to kill them off, but the effort was only partially successful.

England's talisman and captain put them ahead in the 11th minute of Monday's clash in Volgograd, but Tunisia levelled in contentious fashion.

Alli had the first chance of the second half six minutes after the restart as his header was scooped out by Ben Mustapha.

After barraging the enemy goal in the first 10 minutes and seeing Tunisia's starting goalkeeper, Mouez Hassen, taken off with injury, Southgate must have thought he was dreaming. The penalty was awarded after Kyle Walker caught Fakhreddine Ben Youssef with his arm. "We kept our shape and "H" has done it again", he said, referring to Kane's double strike.

"I definitely didn't expect the manager to drop him against Slovenia and as soon as we all saw that we knew that that gaffer was not somebody to be messed around with", said Rose.

Kane - who else? - popped up to break Tunisian hearts and the reaction of those in the BBC Sport studio was priceless.

"It's massive. I'm so proud of the lads", he said.

They have yet to register a win in nine opening games at a European Championship, so if any team can claim to be slow starters on the big stage, it is England, and no country seems to focus so heavily on the fine line between winning and falling short.
