Iran lists demands for improving relations with US

Both the United States and Iran's demands are non-starters for the opposite party.

Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif speaks during the 72nd High-level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace at the United Nations Headquarters in NY, U.S., on April 24, 2018.

"The U.S. withdrawal from some global agreements and undermining others, coupled with efforts to weaken worldwide organizations, are examples of destructive moves so far by the U.S. government, which have unfortunately darkened the outlook for the worldwide order", Zarif said.

Iran has announced a list of 15 demands for improving relations with the United States, including a USA return to the 2015 nuclear accord, in response to a similar list of demands made by Washington last month.

"Obviously, the continuation of such policies can endanger the stability of the worldwide community, turning the United States into a rogue state and an global outlaw", he said.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran's deputy foreign minister, told reporters in Vienna that Tehran was negotiating with the other signatories "to see if they can provide us with a package which can give Iran the benefits of sanctions lifting".

In an address to the second Iran-Europe Cooperation Conference in Brussels on Thursday, Araqchi urged the European sides of the JCPOA to make further efforts to gain the confidence of the Iranian nation. "Iranians say the USA withdrawal from the JCPOA is just a game of bad and good cops with Europe playing the role of the good cop". Araqchi noted that sanctions and the JCPOA can not coexist. Iran, however, stressed that it will return to pre-JCPOA conditions if the nuclear deal fails.

The US withdrew from the deal on May 8, when President Donald Trump refused to renew sanctions waivers on Iran and imposed tough new sanctions instead.

"Mr. Pompeo has forgotten that it is the USA government that needs to prove the credibility of its words and legitimacy of its signature, and not the party that has complied with its global obligations and sticks to its word", the top Iranian diplomat pointed out.
