Chattanooga woman victim of the Bahama tour boat explosion

An American tourist is dead and nine others are injured after a boating incident off the coast of Barraterre in the Bahamas.

Twelve people were on the boat, 10 Americans and two Bahamians. Also among the injured was 22-year-old Stefanie Schaffer, a dancer and athlete who had both legs amputated after the blast, NBC News reports. She is now in a medically induced coma and is not yet aware her life will never be the same. "The boat bursts into flames shortly after 9 a.m.", the page read. Sheila Jones and John Inman were named as other passengers on the boat, but they did not suffer serious injuries.

The news is especially devastating for her family, George told ABC News, because Schaffer "danced her whole childhood". They are being treated at hospitals in Pinellas County. "Stacey will also need surgery for her two fractured legs".

Her family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical expenses. "The kind words and prayers are very much needed and appreciated".

The explosion appeared to completely engulf the boat in flames as thick, black smoke pillowed into the sky.

Video recorded at the scene and obtained by ABC 11 shows the moments after the explosion as passengers on a nearby boat attempt to help.

Chester Cooper, a member of parliament for Exumas and Ragged Island, identified the person who died as an American woman. "We are saddened and our hearts are hurting, but we will get through this together".

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
