Susan Collins Won't Support Anti-Roe v. Wade Nominee

Senators Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have voiced support for the legality of abortion, with Collins saying that she would find any nominee who opposes the Roe v. Wade decision to be "unacceptable".

"I would not support a nominee who demonstrated hostility to Roe v Wade", Collins told CNN's State of the Union, "because that would mean to me that their judicial philosophy would not include a respect for established decisions, for established law, and I believe that is a fundamental tenet of our judicial system".

"She also said that it's a firm precedent". In the landmark case Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), he joined the plurality opinion upholding Roe v. Wade (1973), the case that legalized abortion at the federal level.

Trump has said he would announce his nominee on July 9 and has reportedly been busy reading the writings and background material of some of the prospective candidates.

Oliver then broke down why the news is alarming for those who are concerned about women's rights and equality for the LGBTQ community, noting that Republicans have majority rule in the Senate.

Without Kennedy, the high court will have four justices picked by Democratic presidents and four picked by Republicans, giving Trump the chance to shift the ideological balance toward conservatives for years to come.

These anti-abortion groups may be pushing the administration for representation reasons, but other opponents are agreeing simply in hopes of getting a nominee more easily through the confirmation process.

Indeed, a new poll released Monday found such widespread support for Roe v. Wade. "Academically, in every way", Trump said.

"I'm going to pick someone who is outstanding", he said. He has often served as a swing vote between the court's liberal and conservative justices.

With Kennedy gone, many people are predicting that Roe v. Wade could be overturned.

Collins has also frequently voted with the president, however, including on a crucial December 2017 vote in favor of a tax cuts package that ended the healthcare law's individual mandate.

"And so I would say to my colleagues ... to not just trust that what somebody says to you in a conversation trying to get your vote is what's going to happen when they are on the Supreme Court", Duckworth said. Collins hit back against this suggestion, pointing to her bipartisan record in the Senate and thorough vetting of Supreme Court picks.

"What's important in addition to increasing diversity is how that person would actually interpret law", Chu said.

Former Justice Department official Tom Dupree said Murkowski's decisionmaking should be handled "delicately" because she is one of the only senators to ever win a seat through a "write-in campaign" rather than being printed on the ballot.
