Apple Music might have overtaken Spotify and have more paying U.S. subscribers

Apple is reportedly only slightly above Spotify in US subscriber numbers, with both services having more than 20 million people signed up, but the data reportedly shows a higher growth rate for Apple, which is projected to widen the distance between Spotify in the coming months.

The source, a US-based, major distributor, shared a report detailing the subscriber tallies of several streaming music services, including Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and Sirius XM. In the first 24 hours of release, "Scorpion" streamed on Apple Music 170 million times and 130 million times on Spotify. Spotify falls into the same bracket, but has now dropped into second place when it comes to popularity.

According to the publication, the new report also indicates that Apple's growth rate in 2018 has far outpaced Spotify's, which suggests that Apple Music's lead will continue to grow in the coming months. But Apple's service has grown faster.

Apple Music has now reached the 20 million paying subscribers milestone just after three years from launch, while Spotify, founded in 2006, entered the United States in 2011.

The next big battle between Apple Music and Spotify will be for the global music streaming crown, with Apple now boasting 45 million paying users worldwide versus 70 million for Spotify.

Technology giant Apple has narrowed Spotify's lead in the music streaming market.

Looked at more broadly, however, Apple serves what should be a fairly narrow market of iPhone owners, where Spotify is popular on both Android and iPhone.

Their Apple Music streaming service, in particular, has skyrocketed over the past few months. However, the figure is no match to Spotify's 75 million paid subscribers as of March 31.
