Why Trump Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh Is Business's New Best Friend

"Americans do not want or need 40 more years of Trump's values". Hardiman, 52, who was also appointed by Bush, serves on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

The decision has far-reaching implications for America on everything from abortion to guns to immigration.

Trump is moving the Supreme Court further to the right.

The president said: "Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law". "He's a brilliant jurist with a clear and effective writing style, universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

With reality television-style suspense, he had kept everyone guessing up until the last moment. If Republicans maintain control of the Senate, that gives the president two more years where any retirement from the court is left to him to replace.

Bream was in front of the building to cover the reaction to President Donald Trump's announcement of his nomination to the Supreme Court Monday.

"I am grateful to you and I am humbled by your confidence in me". In the 1990s, Kavanaugh worked on independent counsel Ken Starr's investigation into President Bill Clinton and did not believe in giving the sitting commander in chief a "break". Kavanaugh and Gorsuch served as law clerks to Kennedy at the same time early in their legal careers. The messaging initially centered on the future of abortion rights in the US under a court with Kavanaugh on it. "Whether or not the Supreme Court enforces the spirit of those words, 'Equal Justice Under Law, ' is determined by the individuals who sit on that Court", Harris wrote. I found them qualified to sit on the court.

Some conservatives lobbied against him, worrying that his upbringing in the suburbs of D.C. could mean he'll be the kind of justice who has disappointed conservatives before.

While Trump didn't name the four, top contenders for the role have included federal appeals judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman.

According to the Associated Press, "Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues". But Judge Kavanaugh may not be so accommodating. Like Trump's first nominee previous year, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts of Obamacare.

The front-runner was a front-runner for a reason. In the end, however, the safe pick won out. And the president moved swiftly to fill those openings with young, conservative judges.

He is being accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence and former Sen. If confirmed, Trump's choice would solidify the high court's conservative majority and continue the president's push to shift the federal bench to the right.

Mr Trump is securing a conservative judiciary for a generation. And they certainly want Trump's choice confirmed before the November election, when Democrats have a long-shot chance of retaking the Senate majority. A majority of 51 votes is needed for a confirmation. Meanwhile, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona is battling brain cancer and has not been back to the Capitol since December.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from CT and a member of the Judiciary Committee, said his colleagues should press Kavanaugh to commit to recusing himself from cases involving Mueller's investigation.

One of the biggest issues on which Kavanaugh is expected to have a say is the future of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. In her statement, she said President Trump's nomination was a "destructive tool on a generation of progress for workers, women, LGBTQ people, communities of color and families" and that it was to "radically reverse the course of American justice and democracy". Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence.

All eyes on which senators?

Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative advocacy group, is already up with ads in states such as North Dakota, West Virginia and in, where three Democratic senators are up for re-election.

Trump published a similar list during the 2016 campaign, and it was widely credited with helping him win the votes of social conservatives who otherwise might have been skeptical of a thrice-married billionaire from NY. All three joined with Republicans in confirming Justice Gorsuch. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), seizing on their past support for abortion rights and their votes a year ago to reject a bill that would repeal key parts of the ACA. He supported releasing the girl to a sponsor, where she could obtain an abortion if she chose to do so and leave the government out of it.
