Times Brexiteers Talked Down Chance Of 'No Deal' Brexit That Now Looms

The Chequers agreement, named after the prime minister's countryside retreat, shifted the government's position in a soft Brexit direction.

And he urged Mrs May to return to the "glorious vision" of Brexit she set out in a speech back in January a year ago.

In the last few days, the Prime Minister has reneged on promises made to the European Union in terms of the "Irish backstop" and supported amendments which have undermined her own Brexit White Paper, published only last week.

Johnson compared the Lancaster House plan with the Chequers proposal, and said the latter would have the United Kingdom accepting "every jot and tittle" of European Union regulation "for our own economic health".

Here's some of the bookies' favourites to replace her as leader of the Conservative Party.

It comes as the new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab faces off with the EU's Michel Barnier for the first time today - as Brussels raises threats of no deal chaos.

It should also be noted that just before the government won this crucial vote, they actually lost the vote on the previous amendment, only the second government defeat over Brexit in the Commons.

There is also the looming threat of a damning resignation speech by former foreign secretary Boris Johnson where he could chose to attack the prime minister over her Chequers proposals.

"We have time in these negotiations".

The PM also rejected a call from SNP leader Ian Blackford to extend the Article 50 period, a move which would give the United Kingdom more time to negotiate a deal with the European Union before Brexit becomes official.

The amendment would have required the government to try to negotiate a customs union arrangement with the EU if, by January 21, 2019, it had failed to negotiate a frictionless free trade deal with the bloc.

But by setting a deadline for May to change her approach, she said he appeared to be telling MPs that it would be "in their hands" if she didn't.

"At absolutely no point because Brexit continues to mean Brexit", May replied.

Mr Johnson praised the "great clarity" of Mrs May's speech at Lancaster House, where she said Britain would leave the customs union and single market but strike new trade deals with the EU and countries worldwide.

Johnson, figurehead of the Brexit campaign in the 2016 referendum, led those calls in his resignation speech to parliament.

"We must try now, because we will not get another chance to get it right".

"It is as though a fog of self-doubt has descended", Johnson said.

On Tuesday, it was the turn of the softer, pro-European conservatives in her ranks who put her to the test, as she narrowly averted defeat in a parliamentary vote that signaled the potential for months of gridlock over the country's tortured efforts to extract itself from the bloc.

She told members of the committee: "Over August and September we are going to be releasing a number of technical notifications to set out what United Kingdom citizens and businesses need to do in a no deal scenario, so making much more public awareness of the preparations".
