Amid uproar, Trump says he’s ‘looking forward’ to second meeting with Putin

Russian Federation on Thursday broadcast a series of videos showing the testing and operation of a new generation of nuclear and conventional weapons, days after Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed how to avoid an arms race.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders announced on Friday that Trump had asked his National Security Adviser John Bolton to invite Putin to Washington in the fall and that discussions were already under way.

Numerous lawmakers have criticized Trump for his post-summit statements raising doubts about Russia's interference in the 2016 US elections, and past and current intelligence community officials also differed with many of his statements. He has made contradictory statements over whether he believes Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 US election.

The invitation came as an apparent surprise to the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats when he was told about it during a live interview at the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado.

For their part, the Ukrainian government said on Wednesday that it regards Putin's endorsement of the Crimean referendum as tantamount to the Russian leader confessing to a crime.

Lisa Murkowski, who demanded a more forceful response from Trump.

The president appeared to side with the Russian leader over his own intelligence community's assessment on Russian election meddling.

The White House continued to fuel the week-long fire when White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee announced on Wednesday that Trump was considering a widely-panned request from Russian Federation.

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the upper house of the Russian parliament's foreign affairs committee, said the idea of questioning the translator about what was said privately sets a risky precedent that threatens the "the whole idea of diplomacy", according to Russian news agencies.

Thursday marked the third day of Trump trying to manage the political fallout from his widely criticized performance at the summit meeting with Putin in Finland.

Trump also tweeted on Wednesday that his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels last week was an "acknowledged triumph", adding that his one-on-one with Putin "may prove to be, in the long run, an even greater success".

Earlier Mr Trump rejected a proposal by Mr Putin that Russian Federation be allowed to question United States citizens.

He later said he had misspoken at the summit.

He added that he did not yet know what Mr Trump and Mr Putin discussed during their meeting, at which only their interpreters were also present. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from SC, said he was happy to hear that Sanders had clarified Trump's comment.

The scale of the bipartisan outcry at Trump's stance toward Putin has only been rivaled by his 2017 waffling over condemning white supremacist demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia.

After a long pause, Coats said, "That's a place I don't really go to publicly".

"It later then came out in the Russian press that they had a list, and I was at the top of that list", McFaul said on MSNBC Thursday morning. "We talked about this of course while meeting President Trump".

"The reason that the Russians are probably leaking this information is because they don't want a nuclear war either", Stone said on July 27, 2016. Russian officials worry that domestic turmoil in the USA will hamper potential future cooperation on Syria or arms control discussed at the summit.

"And so, make no mistake about it, we are very clear with our adversaries, when it's in our best interest, to share with them what we're doing", he said.
