Trump pushes for speedy NAFTA renegotiation in Mexico letter

Lopez Obrador became Mexico's President elect in a landslide victory on July 1, on a socialist platform advocating financial aid for students and the elderly, energy reform, slashing the wages of politicians and increased social spending.

Mexico's President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador released a letter Tuesday from U.S. President Donald Trump saying a NAFTA deal would need to happen fast or he would "go a much different route".

The government of Canada has requested a review of the decision of the U.S. administration to raise tariffs on imports of solar panels from the point of view of the terms of the North American free trade agreement (NAFTA), stating that 30% fee is illegal and unjust.

"It would not be my preference but would be far more profitable for the United States and its taxpayers", Trump added.

The spat over metals has diminished relations between Canada and the US, with Trump hurling personal insults at Trudeau on Twitter, and raising questions about whether the NAFTA talks can proceed.

After the election, top officials from both the outgoing and new Mexican governments met in Mexico City with senior Trump administration officials led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The talks, which began 11 months ago, have been bogged down by several points of contention, including U.S. demands for tighter auto manufacturing rules.

Trump says that he agrees with four priorities that were outlined by Lopez Obrador in a previous letter.

Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports were still casting a shadow on NAFTA talks, Morneau said. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer hasn't shown an openness to do that, the people said. Shortly after Mr. Trump's inauguration, the Americans presented the Canadians with what the official described as a back-of-the-napkin agreement that Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law and presidential adviser, had purportedly reached with Mexico's Mr. Videgaray. "I have directed them to redouble those efforts with your incoming team".

NAFTA renegotiations began in August past year after demands made by the Trump administration, which denounced the deal and threatened to abandon it. Trump wrote in the letter.

"America welcomes legal immigrants from around the world, but we can not accept illegal immigration", the letter read.

The Canadian government believes these measures are "unfair and illegal".

The Trump administration on Tuesday said it would pay up to $12 billion to help USA farmers weather the growing trade battle with China, the European Union and others, a clear signal the president is determined to stick with tariffs.

Lopez Obrador, 64, pledged during the campaign to "put (Trump) in his place".
