Mars set to make closest approach to Earth in 15 years

"Since Mars and the Sun appear on opposite sides of the sky, we say that Mars is in "opposition", NASA explained. Mars and Earth will be about 57.6 million km away from each other on July 27.

"It hasn't been this close since 2003 and won't be again until 2287", said Kelly.

"In this case it's going to appear about five times brighter than usual", added Kelly.

This and the 60,000-year gap statement are true, according to the agency, but they represent "a bit of hype" as Mars and Earth have been nearly this close many times in recent history.

The planet's close encounter in 2003 made headlines as it was the closest Mars came to Earth in almost 60,000 years, sparking rumors that it would appear as large as the moon.

The gravitational pull by other planets also constantly changes the shape of their orbits a little bit, with Jupiter especially influencing the path that Mars takes around the Sun.

Astronomers predict that the Mars will come close to the Earth in 5 years

Here's what you need to know about the red planet's approach next week.

Look in the southeast to see Mars in the evening sky.

Mars has been growing bigger and brighter in the night sky in 2018 and it will reach its peak on Thursday night, bringing the best opportunity to view the Red Planet since 2003. But every 15 to 17 years the opposition also occurs near Mars' perihelion, the point at which the red planet's orbit is closest to the sun, which makes it even brighter in the sky when viewed from Earth, according to NASA. Only Venus will appear brighter.

Hubble, one of the largest space telescopes, captured images of dust storms on the Red Planet this summer.

The red planet is easily visible with the naked eye, but folks with a telescope may be able to see some details of the planet, including the planet's ice caps, according to AccuWeather. That same day, parts of the world will see a total lunar eclipse. On Mars, they are the result of protons, and scientists have just figured out how the events happen. North America is the only continent on Earth from which the eclipse will not be visible. NASA said on its website. For some, that means a chance to see a total lunar eclipse - the longest of the 21st century, but the eclipse won't be visible from the United States.
