In Italy's Conte, Trump Sees a Like-minded European

Conte, who met with Trump in Washington on Monday, said that Italy doesn't expect sanctions against Russia to be lifted overnight, but that Rome maintains a need for dialog with Russia and doesn't want the sanctions to harm Russian civil society or its small and medium businesses.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was openly criticised by president Trump when he visited London this month and she also faced a backlash from angry voters. CBS chief White House correspondent Major Garrett joins CBSN's Elaine Quijano with the latest. At the time, Trump said the deal was "defective at its core".

The LaRouche Political Action Committee welcomed the Italian head of government to Washington, at a rally near the White House, brandishing a highly visible banner reading "Benvenuto Prime Minister Conte!"

He stressed that the "European Union now has a responsibility" to help Italy manage migration, while Trump said he hoped more European leaders would follow Conte's example of "bold leadership". "However, exactly because we are open to dialogue with Russia, the position of my government is to make sure that the system of sanctions doesn't affect the civic society, doesn't affect the economy of the small and medium size enterprises in Russia", Conte said.

The two leaders held a one-on-one Oval Office meeting and more extensive bilateral discussions before facing the media at 2:00 pm (1800 GMT). Italy spent an estimated 1.15 per cent of GDP on defence in 2018, according to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation figures.

"We may have to do some pretty drastic things, but we're going to get it", Trump told an enthusiastic crowd at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, where he was stumping for Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Ron DeSantis.

The Italian press has suggested the meeting will serve to boost Conte's profile, often overshadowed by his deputy prime ministers and those parties' exuberant leaders: Matteo Salvini of the League party, and Luigi Di Maio of the Five Star Movement.

Despite several points of agreement, there were some hints of tension, notably when Trump referred to America's trade deficit with the Mediterranean nation.

"I have no Red Line", the President said in response to a reporter's question.

Trump is noting the USA trade deficit with Italy and says he's sure "we'll straighten that out pretty quickly".
