Salads and wraps from Trader Joe's, Kroger possibly contaminated with Cyclospora

The products were produced between July 12 and July 18, and contain a "best by" date ranging from July 18 to July 23.

The new recall, which the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued this week, does not affect the Kroger-owned Mariano's grocery chain, company spokesman Jim Hyland said Wednesday. A full list of products, labels, code numbers and identifying information can be found at fsis.usda.gov.

The products were sold by grocery stores including Trader Joe's, Walgreens and Kroger. Consumers who have these products should not eat them; rather, people should throw the products away or return them to the place of purchase, the statement said.

The Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite can cause illness that is not life-threatening, with symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns.

The symptoms of Cyclosporiasis include loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and other flu-like symptoms.

They have the establishment number 'EST.

The summer has been rife with recalls and reported cyclospora infections, especially in IL. The alert said the incubation period ranges from two to 14 days and that illnesses "might not have been reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported".

The FSIS encourages anyone concerned about an illness to contact their health-care provider. Indianapolis-based distributor Caito Foods LLC reported that officials with Fresh Express had issued a recall notice for chopped romaine that was used in the wraps and salads.

However, the infection can be treated with antibiotics.

The problem within Caito Foods is related to the lettuce supplier, Fresh Express.

At least 286 people were sickened and 11 were hospitalized as a result of the May outbreak.
