3D-Printed Gun Debate Continues Amidst Site Takedown

A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order, stopping the release of downloadable blueprints for 3D printed guns, which would be allowed to be released on Wednesday. Trump said Tuesday that he's "looking into" the idea, saying making 3-D plastic guns available to the public "doesn't seem to make much sense!". "In the United States, it's now illegal to own or make a wholly plastic gun of any kind, including those made on a 3D printer".

Eight Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block the federal government's settlement with the company that makes the plans available online.

The legal battle all began in 2013, with the release of a gun called "The Liberator", which has already been downloaded a million times. The "ghost guns" blueprints have already been downloaded thousands of times since they were leaked online this week.

The gun-rights activists created the website regardless of the judge's ruling, citing the First Amendment. In a reversal of policy, the Trump Administration recently entered into a settlement that would waive export restrictions on Defense Distributed's downloadable gun files enabling the company to re-post the plans and prompting Washington's lawsuit.

Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence called the restraining order "a strong step and a clear victory for the entire gun safety movement" in a statement. They said the Trump administration had failed to explain why it settled the case and that its decision violated their ability to regulate firearms and keep citizens safe.

By providing the instructions, the company would be helping Pennsylvanians circumvent state laws requiring gun-buyers to be at least 18 years old, pass background checks and obtain licenses and permits for some weapons, Shapiro's office has said. In response, Wilson has taken down his site and models, but he will be continuing the legal fight.

With blueprints for controversial 3D-printed guns set to go online in just a matter of hours, local lawmakers and gun control advocates are working to stop the plans from being published.

"By prohibiting those plans from going on to the Internet, you are not stopping criminals from getting their hands on guns", said David Amad, vice president of the gun rights group Open Carry Texas. Another hearing is scheduled for August 10. Federal law passed in 1988, crafted with the NRA's support, makes it unlawful to manufacture, import, sell, ship, deliver, possess, transfer, or receive an undetectable firearm.

It would have allowed anyone with access to a printer to potentially build a lethal weapon, which opponents say can not be seen by a metal detector or tracked to a licence holder. The petition for the temporary restraining order was filed in federal court in Seattle.
