CFB notebook: Meyer's handling of allegations against ex-assistant questioned

Urban Meyer, 54, the head football coach from Ohio State University, was put on administrative leave on August 1 after he was shockingly accused of lying about his knowledge of an alleged domestic violence situation between OSU assistant coach Zach Smith and his ex-wife Courtney Smith back in 2015.

On Wednesday, former ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy obtained and published text messages from Courtney Smith that indicated she informed Meyer's wife and another coach's wife about the 2015 incident.

Ohio State is investigating allegations into the now-former Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith who abused his then-wife in 2015.

In a statement Wednesday evening, Ohio State said it was conducting an inquiry into the allegations raised by Courtney Smith.

Meyer said in a statement he and athletic director Gene Smith agreed that his being on leave was best for the investigation. Smith had been arrested for criminal trespassing in May.

Ohio State may be in violation of Title IX, which states: discrimination on the basis of sex, can include sexual harassment, rape, and sexual assault.

McMurphy's reporting detailed that at the very least, Meyer's wife and the wives of some his staff members were aware of the alleged abuse. Smith was sacked last month after he was charged with criminal trespassing in relation to dropping his children off at his ex-wife's home against her wishes. Zach Boren - a former fullback and linebacker at Ohio State - posted a pair of tweets in response to the development.

In 2009, when he was a University of Florida assistant, Smith was arrested for aggravated battery on a pregnant victim (Courtney), according to a Gainesville Police Department report (she later dropped the charges).

Courtney: "Restraining orders don't do anything in Ohio-I tried to get protection order which is what started this whole investigation".

When asked, she said Shelley never came back to clarify whether she ever told her husband.

Courtney opened up about the reported domestic violence. 'I told Shelley, I sent her some pictures, I spoke to her on the phone.

"I got a text late last night something happened in 2015 - and there was nothing", he said. Smith was sacked July 24.

Meyer was out of coaching for a season, but was hired by Ohio State in November 2011 to replace Jim Tressel, who was sacked before that season for lying to the NCAA and university of about rules violation committed by some of his players. The bigger issue with this situation is the past track record for Meyer in handling off the field issues for his coaching staff and players.
