Mendocino Complex Fire approaches 300,000 acres as hot, dry winds continue

As of the morning of August 7, the Mendocino Complex Fire has burned 283,800 acres (115,000 hectares) of land in northern California around Clear Lake and is only 30 percent contained.

More than 14,000 firefighters are battling more than a dozen major blazes throughout California, state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean said.

Another major fire, Ferguson, has left two dead and forced the closure of part of the Yosemite national park, and is now only 38 percent contained.

Deputy fire chief Mr Mclean dismissed Mr Trump's comments to United States media, saying firefighters had "plenty of water" to carry out their work.

"Because we're out here trying to save people's homes, and so you see some of the destruction the fire does", Pizano said.

The size of the fires surpasses a blaze last December in Southern California that burned 281,893 acres. It killed two people, including a firefighter, and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings before being fully contained on January 12.

Several areas impacted by the Mendocino Complex Fire are seeing evacuations being lifted.

What's more, over the same period, the state has experienced eight of its 10 most destructive fires in history. But officials say it threatens 11,300 buildings and some new evacuations were ordered over the weekend as the flames spread.

Both Sierra National Forest and Stanislaus National Forest are affected now too. In rural areas up north, what began as two small fires more than a week ago have grown at breathtaking speed to form the Mendocino Complex Fire, a massive and still-growing inferno that has charred an area nearly the size of Los Angeles.

The Mendocino Complex fire is burning in Colusa, Lake and Mendocino counties, just north of wine country in Northern California.

The River Fire is smaller, scorching 48,920 acres so far, and burning to the west of Clear Lake.

The two wildfires that make up the Mendocino Complex Fire grew over the weekend to become the second largest wildfire in the state's history.

The larger Ranch Fire remained active overnight, expanding to 241,772 acres and continuing to hold at 20 percent containment, due in part to dry, heavy fuel, high temperatures and limited access to the area by firefighters.

On Monday, another fast-moving fire ignited in the state - this time in Orange County, where firefighters battled the Holy Fire that expanded to more than 4,000 acres. Seventy five residences have been destroyed.

The so-called Mendocino Complex fire is only a couple of square miles larger than a deadly blaze last December but it's still growing. The Thomas Fire from 2017 is the largest, having burned 281,893 acres.
