Gates Describes Manafort Orders While Defense Hammers 'Secret Life'

Manafort's defense team's primary strategy has been to pin much of the blame for financial crimes on Gates, and some observers felt Downing made some headway toward that goal on Tuesday. A bookkeeper said she helped disguise foreign income as a loan to reduce Manafort's tax burden.

Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano expressed his displeasure with the judge presiding over Paul Manafort's tax and bank fraud trial in Virginia by telling him to stop making this about him. The crimes Manafort allegedly committed do not have bearing on that central question, but they were uncovered in the course of the special counsel investigation; this is the first trial resulting from Mueller's probe.

"I understand how frustrated you are", he told a prosecutor Monday.

The grand total of Manafort's payments from his offshore accounts to vendors and for properties came out to $15.5 million over the course of 2010-2014, according to Magionos.

Welch also said Manafort should have reported multiple foreign bank accounts to the IRS in those years.

Manafort, who helped Republicans Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan reach the White House, was Mr Trump's campaign chairman from May to August 2016.

On Wednesday, after eliciting an admission from Gates that his plea agreement could be thrown out if he lied, leading to further charges, Downing asked him if had told the Special Counsel "that you actually engaged in four extramarital affairs?" "You said you had a made mistake", the lawyer said.

All three testified that Manafort and Gates failed to tell them about the foreign holdings in Cyprus. Gates was also listed as an owner of several of the accounts.

When Trump asked Perlmutter, a friend and confidante, to help put together his government in December 2016, he agreed to be an outside adviser, selected veterans as his focus, and roped in two other friends, Palm Beach doctor Bruce Moskovitz and lawyer Marc Sherman, Arnsdorf says.

"While the firm believes that her actions were related only to work she performed for Mr. Manafort, and that no other client was affected, a detailed, independent internal review is being conducted to confirm that her activity was isolated", the firm said in the statement.

"I'm not happy with this judge".

Downing at one point asked whether Mueller's investigators had interviewed Gates about his role in the campaign, prompting an objection from prosecutors and a sidebar conference with U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III.

Morgan Magionos told jurors Wednesday that bank records from Cyprus, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the United Kingdom revealed the accounts were connected to Manafort and his associates.

"I do somehow think he has gotten his back up personally about Greg Andres".

At times, Ellis has crossed lines, Litman said.

He also admitted to leading a "secret life", embezzling funds from his former boss Manafort, and getting involved in other shady dealings. "I am here. I have accepted responsibility and I am trying to change". Prosecutors say they hope to reach their finale by Friday. Gates also said Manafort floated banker Stephen Calk's name for consideration as secretary of the Army, a post he ultimately did not get. "Right now, it seems clear that it's the prosecution that should be specifically requesting that instruction from the judge in advance, as Judge Ellis has had some unusually cutting words for the prosecutors in this case".

Gates laying out a roadmap on how he and Manafort allegedly dodged US taxes. after admitting Monday they committed numerous crimes as business partners.

He testified under terms of a deal with Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who's investigating suspected collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign during the 2016 presidential election.

Gates faced a thrashing to his reputation from lead defense attorney Kevin Downing on Tuesday and Wednesday as Downing sought to undermine Gates' credibility as a witness. Gates was asked about 11 Cypriot accounts, and he testified that they were all owned by Ukrainian businessmen.
