Playing two spinners at Lord's tempting, says Virat Kohli

India had lost the first Test of the series to England by 31 runs at Edgbaston. The story of the second innings was more or less the same as Kohli top-scored with 51 runs in 93 balls.

"It hurts when you are not scoring runs (and) as well, the team is not doing well", Kohli said ahead of the crunch clash at the hone of cricket.

India: Virat Kohli (c), Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav. Jasprit Bumrah, who fractured his hand during T20I vs Ireland, has not recovered fully and is not available for selection.

England would also like to see an improved batting performance.

Neither team have named their final XI, although 20-year-old batsman Ollie Pope will make his England debut.

Joe Root made 80 in the first innings and looked slightly more comfortable against Ashwin in comparison to his teammates. Barring Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Jonny Bairstow, other batsmen struggled to tackle some quality swing bowling.

It will also be interesting to see the effect that the absence of Ben Stokes has on England, not just being shorn of his talismanic talents on the field but also the much less easy to quantify psychological damage that the revelations from Bristol Crown Court might wreak as well. They may go in for a like-for-like replacement with the inclusion of pace-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes, who has recovered from an injury. It is expected that the groundsmen will shave a few bits before the start of the match but even if they don't, the pitch is likely to turn out quite dry. With the ball, James Anderson did well in both the innings, while Sam Curran was the home team's star man in the 1st Test who did well with both bat and ball to help England to claim victory.

Root confirmed Wednesday that Pope would bat at number four but that England would delay a decision on whether to play Ali or Woakes instead of Stokes until the morning of the match, with the uncapped Jamie Porter released from the 13-man squad.

India struggled against the swinging ball, with England finding it hard to combat Ravichandran Ashwin's off-spin.
