Va. gov., Charlottesville declare state of emergency ahead of rally anniversary

The Wall Street Journal reported last fall that Facebook accounts that appeared to be linked to Russian entities posted extreme messages, including anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant messages after the 2016 election and racially divisive messages during the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville last August. But like many other owners, she will be open anyway. Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old legal assistant, was struck and killed when a white supremacist slammed his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters.

Restaurants in downtown Washington, D.C., are taking precautions for the "Unite the Right 2" white supremacist rally planned for Sunday, with some planning to close for the weekend and others educating their staffs on handling hard customers.

This year's "Unite the Right" rally is scheduled for Sunday in Lafayette Park, just across from the White House.

Bowser said safety should not be a concerned, but understood why some are anxious.

Many business owners have said the plan is too restrictive and will cost them significant revenue on what would normally be a busy summer weekend.

Albemarle County resident John Miska, 68, Algenon Cain, 28, of Red Springs, N.C. and William Hawkins Jr., 53, of Amelia, Va., were arrested by law enforcement personnel downtown Saturday for disorderly conduct, trespassing and public intoxication, respectively, on the one-year anniversary weekend of the white nationalist Unite the Right rally.
