Sarah Sanders 'sorry' for misleading black jobs numbers

Ms Sanders said President Donald Trump had created three times as many jobs for black workers under his presidency as President Obama did.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered a rare correction and apology after providing false information during a press briefing Tuesday about how many jobs Barack Obama created for blacks during his presidency.

Sanders tweeted Tuesday: "Jobs numbers for Pres Trump and Pres Obama were correct, but the time frame for Pres Obama wasn't".

The lack of diversity in President Donald Trump's administration has come under fresh scrutiny in the wake of a new tell-all book from former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, who was the highest ranking African-American official on Trump's staff. After eight years of president Obama in office, he only created 195,000 jobs for African-Americans.

But that's not even close to true, according to Labor Department figures.

Later Tuesday, the White House Council on Economic Advisers appeared to take responsibility for the mistake and published new data comparing black job creation following Obama's elections in 2008 and 2012 with black job creation following Trump's election in 2016. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US economy added about 3 million jobs for black workers under Obama.

Aside from the apples-to-oranges comparison of black employment under each president, the press secretary's mistake highlighted the CEA's decision to measure the economic records of presidents starting on the day they were elected rather than the day they took office.

Sanders made the claim as she was answering questions about whether she could guarantee Trump had never been recorded using the N-word while producing "The Apprentice".

Pressed by reporters Wednesday for a specific number, Sanders said: "I'm not going to go through and do a count". "Just look at the economy alone".
