State, local leaders express sympathy on passing of Sen. John McCain

Ohio's Republican Gov. John Kasich, a primary opponent of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, tweeted Monday on the decision to raise the flags at the White House to full staff, calling it "Shameful".

Mr. Obama, who defeated McCain in 2008 presidential race, issued a statement shortly after McCain's death saying that "we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher - the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed".

Critics on Saturday blasted for president for the seemingly superficial nature of his words for McCain. He had discontinued his medical treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer, his family said in a statement on Friday, a year after he announced his diagnosis. He spent years as a prisoner of war at Hoa Lo prison - or the "Hanoi Hilton", as it was known to American soldiers.

One of McCain's long-serving Senate colleagues, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Sunday, "The nation mourns the loss of a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service".

Bush also released a statement on Mr McCain's passing, writing how hard it is to imagine that such a vivid life has ended.

After Democratic Ted Kennedy of MA died in 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered flags at the White House flown at half-staff for five days.

News of Mr McCain's passing has elicited an outpouring of tribute and sympathy from Americans across the political aisle.

McCain, even as he neared death, disparaged Trump's presidency, rebuking the US leader for his seeming embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin's position at last month's Helsinki summit that Russia had not meddled in the 2016 USA presidential election. Our hearts and prayers are with you!"-but it's the Instagram version of that sentiment that's getting all the attention".

President Trump ordered the flags to fly at half-staff on Saturday evening.

His funeral ceremony will take place on Saturday at the National Cathedral, where former Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama are expected to deliver eulogies. "I have read about him, and he's not, um, he's an Arab", a woman told McCain in the video clip.

Ted Kennedy, on Monday fondly remembered his father's friendship with the late Sen.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko issued a message of condolences, but none was forthcoming from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But sources say that Trump only tweeted anything at all so that people couldn't accuse him of ignoring the death of John McCain entirely.

Vice-President Mike Pence will reportedly attend on behalf of the Trump administration.
