President Trump cancels pay raises for federal employees set for January

In doing away with the 2.1 percent across-the-board pay increase that was scheduled to take effect in January, Trump said he was working "put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course". It is worth noting that the Senate spending plan did receive some opposition from the White House, as Trump has recommended freezing federal salary despite increasing pay by 1.4 percent previous year, according to Washington's Top News.

"Accordingly, I have determined that it is appropriate to exercise my authority to set alternative across-the-board and locality pay adjustments for 2019".

That measure, along with a new two-year federal budget and tax cuts heralded by Republicans, have led to accusations Trump is ignoring the federal deficit, despite promising he would address it as president. Federal workers have been hit with the negative news while troops are experiencing the opposite since they will get a 2.6 per cent increase next year.

Congress can override the president's pay freeze through legislation.

"We can not balance the budget on the backs of our federal employees and I will work with my House and Senate colleagues to keep the pay increase in our appropriations measures that we vote on in September", she continued.

Instead of giving across-the-board increases, which he says don't address pay disparities or accomplish mission or retention goals, he wants to move to a merit-based system that rewards employees for their performance.

The Senate has approved a 1.9 percent pay hike as part of a spending bill for federal agencies, while the House included no raise.

This is not the first time in recent history that a president has frozen civilian federal pay raises. Trump signed executive orders in May that made it easier to fire federal employees and placed limits on public-sector unions. Ben Cardin, D-Maryland, in a statement. "I can think of nothing more hypocritical or disingenuous than to turn around and throw hardworking federal employees under the bus on the pretext of fiscal responsibility".

The Trump administration proposed $143.5 billion in cuts to federal employee compensation in May, including substantial decreases in retirement funding.

The state with the largest number of federal workers is California, followed by Virginia, the District of Columbia and Texas. In light of our Nation's fiscal situation, Federal employee pay must be performance-based, and aligned strategically toward recruiting, retaining, and rewarding high-performing Federal employees and those with critical skill sets.
