Space station "stable" after leak

Well, not always. It was recently announced that ground control in Houston picked up on a pressure leak on the International Space Station probably caused my a micro-meteorite.

Flight controllers at NASA Mission Control Center in Houston worked with their Russian counterparts to enable the repairs. Flight controllers will monitor the pressure trends overnight.

Back to Earth the next expedition to the worldwide space station in April 2019 will complete the program by sending on the Russian spacecraft to the ISS, American astronauts.

"The crew is in no danger and is actively working troubleshooting procedures", the space agency said in a tweet.

On Wednesday at 23:00 UTC (19:00 EDT), flight controllers began to notice a tiny pressure leak in the ISS. "The design engineers believe it is the result of a micrometeorite", he said.

Mission controllers were first alerted to the issue by air pressure sensors on board the station.

On August 30 morning, the crew taped over the hole, slowing the leak.

"As part of its normal operations planning, NASA is continuing to assess multiple scenarios to ensure continued USA access to the International Space Station", NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Schierholz said in an email.

The crew's makeshift repairs to the leak seemingly have stabilised the situation - for now at least - it's been reported by officials.

The leaking Soyuz - one of two at the station - arrived at the orbiting lab in June with three astronauts.

A minute breach about 2mm in size, smaller than the fingernail on a little finger, was detected in in the upper section of a Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft.

A NASA spokesperson stated that they could not speculate at the moment if the three astronauts must return earlier or not, in case the small leak cannot be stopped.

Both natural micrometeoroids (bits of rock left over from the formation of our solar system) and space debris (small pieces of spacecraft that still orbit Earth) are travelling at incredible speeds through space.
