Canada trade talks to resume after odd turn for the worse

That letter started a 90-day required notice period for Congress before the president can legally sign a new deal.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned Congress on Saturday not to interfere with his plans for a new North American Free Trade Agreement or he would cancel the deal entirely.

He said Trump wants to make good trade deals that protect the American worker while promoting economic growth.

Trumka also criticized Trump during the interview on Sunday, saying the president's actions have done more harm than good to laborers, including failure to develop an infrastructure program "that could put a lot of us back to work". "If we don't make a fair deal for the United States after decades of abuse, Canada will be out", Trump tweeted on Saturday, a day after the trade negotiations with Canada were upended by leaked off-the-record remarks he made to Bloomberg.

A US-Mexico deal sealed on Monday excluded Canada.

A few weeks ago, the United States began negotiating with Mexico, leaving Canada on the sidelines.

Trump is attempting to get a new NAFTA deal signed before current President Enrique Peña Nieto leaves office December 1.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert E. Lighthizer said Canada could still join the U.S.

In the remarks that were published by the Toronto Sun on Friday, Trump said that he did not intend to make any concessions to Canada during the NAFTA negotiations. "It's pretty hard to see how that would work without having Canada in the deal".

A tentative U.S. -Mexico agreement was announced Monday, when Mr. Trump first said he was prepared to move forward without Canada. He was involved in tough negotiations for the Canada-U.S.

At this key time, Canada can not let up on its targeted cultivation of USA contacts, former Canadian diplomat Colin Robertson said, in order to keep pressure on the White House not to leave Canada by the wayside.

Outgoing Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto wanted to sign a deal before he left office December 1.

Mike Huckabee took issue on Labor Day with AFL/CIO President Richard Trumka over his comments about the economy and American workers, saying there is no way he could say matters are not good. The talks are scheduled to resume Wednesday in Washington. Ottawa does have other complaints. If we don't make a fair deal for the USA after decades of abuse, Canada will be out.

Experts have said the flashpoints include trade barriers that protect Canadian dairy farmers and Ottawa's insistence on keeping Nafta provisions for resolving disputes.

When the Trump administration notified Congress past year that it meant to renegotiate NAFTA, critics note that it said it would enter talks with both Canada and Mexico.

Trump's move on Friday to notify Congress that he planned to sign a deal with Mexico in 90 days and would include Canada "if it is willing" appeared to avoid what many in the US business community and Congress had seen as a worst-case scenario. And it's considering slapping tariffs of up to 25 percent on an additional $200 billion in Chinese imports after a public comment period ends Thursday.
