Korean Leaders To Meet This Month About A 'Nuclear-Free Korean Peninsula'

South Korean presidential spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom says South Korea has Kim's message and will forward it to the United States.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he wants to denuclearise the Korean peninsula during U.S. President Donald Trump's first term, as he agreed to hold a third summit with his South Korean counterpart this month in Pyongyang, Seoul officials said on Thursday.

Trump began this morning's twitter activity complimenting Kim Jong Un, who had tossed POTUS a lifeline by proclaiming his "unwavering faith in President Trump".

Kim restated his commitment to denuclearizing the Korean peninsula Thursday.

South Korean officials told reporters earlier today that Kim wants to continue the negotiations he and the US have engaged in since the summit in Singapore.

Yonhap's analysts saluted the South Korean government's role as a mediator in denuclearization talks and suggested North Korea might have pumped the breaks on Pompeo's trips to Pyongyang to give South Korean officials an opportunity to remain involved in negotiations.

However, Mr Kim has expressed a "sense of frustration" with the global community for not appreciating what he called Pyongyang's "very significant and meaningful" steps, Mr Chung said.

"Kim also made it clear that he needs some kind of proof Trump has abandoned the U.S.'s hostile policy before moving toward denuclearization". Last month, USA military commanders in Seoul also reversed another of Moon's initiatives, namely sending a train across the DMZ and running it on a North Korean railway to test the rails' condition.

Last month, President Trump cancelled Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's planned trip to North Korea.

Kim told visiting South Korean envoys Wednesday he was ready to accept "stronger measures" to restrict his nuclear program and wanted a declaration with the U.S.to formally end the Korean War, the officials said. "But the work of convincing Chairman Kim to make the strategic shift which we talked about, for a brighter future for the people of North Korea, continues", he said.

Chung and Suh Hoon, the director of South Korea's National Intelligence Service, traveled last week to Pyongyang to lay groundwork for the third meeting between Kim and South's President Moon Jae-in. We haven't had any nuclear tests, we haven't had any missile tests, which we consider a great thing.

The phrase "complete denuclearization" - a term long preferred by North Korea - could be read to preclude nuclear-capable US bombers and submarines from operating near South Korea. The impasse between North Korea and the United States, with neither side seemingly willing to make any substantive move, has generated widespread skepticism over Trump's claims that Kim is intent on dismantling his nuclear weapons program.

But U.S. officials said they have already made concessions, with the suspension of U.S.

The newly appointed United States envoy for the North, Stephen Biegun, last month said Kim had promised "final, fully verified denuclearization" at the summit.

Kim insisted that formally ending the Korean War had nothing to do with US troops stationed in South Korea, Chung said.

The war ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, meaning US -led United Nations forces, including South Korea, are technically still at war with the North. Signing a peace treaty without a disarmament deal also carries risks for the USA, because it could legitimize Kim's control over half of the peninsula and undermine the rationale for stationing 28,000 or so American troops on the peninsula.

"It is the case that there is still an enormous amount of work to do", Pompeo told a news conference in New Delhi.

Mr Kim was also pleased to receive a personal letter from Mr Moon, delivered by Mr Chung, KCNA added.
