Legendary actor Burt Reynolds dies at age 82

Reynolds, the star of countless action and comedy films over a career spanning almost half a century, passed away Thursday morning in Florida at the age of 82, his publicist, Jeffrey Lane, confirmed to CBSNews.

The actor had suffered with heart problems for years and underwent heart surgery in February 2010.

Reynolds was a beloved movie and television star, appearing in classics such as Smokey and the Bandit, Boogie Nights and The Cannonball Run. Reynolds shared the screen with his fair share of legendary actresses, including Jill Clayburgh, Candice Bergen, Dolly Parton, Goldie Hawn, and Julie Andrews.

He has one adult son, Quinton Anderson Reynolds, from his second marriage.

In his heyday, he was reportedly earning around $10 million a year, due to his appearances in The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit and Hooper.

However, Reynolds career never gained the subsequent momentum that Boogie Nights suggested it might, and much of his work since consisted of small roles in low budget movies and TV voicework on shows such as King of the Hill and American Dad. I was interested in having a good time.

Reynold's singular, inimitable brand of suave masculinity slowly went out of popular style over the years, and a string of recent auctions featuring his possessions would indicate a few financial struggles along the way.

He earned his first and only Oscar nomination in 1998 for Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights".

Reynolds had visited New Zealand to make the 2004 film Without a Paddle, alongside Seth Green. He moved to NY and landed minor stage and TV roles before making his film debut in 1961.

Reynolds played college football at Florida State University and, after withdrawing from the sports program due to injuries, took a theater class.

Actors Ralph Macchio and Kevin Smith also paid tribute to the star, remembering their childhoods watching him in "Smokey the Bandit".

It was the original "Smokey" in 1977 that Reynolds is best known for; a Hal Needham action comedy flick that featured Reynolds as Bo "Bandit" Darville, a man hired to transport 400 cases of beer from Texas to Atlanta in 28 hours in his black Pontiac Trans-Am.

The macho star also appeared in Deliverance, which was nominated for three Academy Awards. "I don't know if it's the best acting I've done, but it's the best movie I've ever been in".

He would later call Field "the one that got away".
