Anonymous peeks behind the White House curtain

Published on Wednesday in the New York Times, the anonymous senior member of the Trump administration claimed that the president is unfit for office and that staff member have banded together to quash his most unsafe impulses.

President Trump is pushing back at The New York Times after the newspaper printed an anonymous op-ed reportedly written by "a senior official in the Trump administration".

The Times said it published the op-ed to get the information out, but without the author's name, in order to protect the job of the senior White House official.

If they aren't willing to resign, the official said, then, as The Daily Beast puts it, the op-ed is "little more than reputational insurance". "This is just another example of the liberal media's concerted effort to discredit the President", Sanders said.

Pompeo said during a trip to India that he was not the author and condemned the Times for publishing the article, while Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Defense Secretary James Mattis did not write it.

One of the callers allegedly told Lee that whoever wrote the piece should "be hung".

'The President's threats both underscore why we must safeguard the identity of the writer of this op-ed and serve as a reminder of the importance of a free and independent press to American democracy'.

In the piece, the writer had claimed: "The root of the problem is the president's amorality".

"But Rudy Giuliani, the president's attorney, suggested that it "would be appropriate" for Trump to ask for a formal investigation into the identity of the op-ed author".

Former CIA Director John Brennan called the piece "active insubordination.born out of loyalty to the country".

Trump described the story as "phony" on Wednesday.

Trump supporters have been calling the New York Times en masse. Aboard Air Force One today, Trump told reporters he wasn't sure if he'll be taking action against the paper.

"We have a lot of love in the administration, and the White House is, truly, as you would say, a well-oiled machine", he said.

Trump immediately slammed as "gutless" the unsigned op-ed - published a day after excerpts from bombshell book claiming that White House staff were constantly battling to rein in the president's worst impulses.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has urged Mr Trump to conduct lie detector tests to find out who wrote the piece.
