Hurricane Florence: South Carolina evacuation before storm hits US

Hurricane Florence has been upgraded to a major category 4 hurricane as of noon on Monday.

Florence rapidly intensified into a fearsome category 3 hurricane on Monday and could strike a direct and unsafe blow to the Carolinas later this week, possibly as a category 4, forecasters said.

"Folks, if you are in the Carolinas or Virginia - this is a historic storm", declared Eric Holthaus, meteorologist and journalist who writes about extreme weather and climate change for Grist.

I believe the oil trade is to fade rallies on storms because of rapid increases in United States onshore production but, as always, the trick is the timing.

Where is the hurricane now?

The storm was centered about 750 miles southeast of Bermuda and moving west at 6 mph.

Hurricane Florence strengthened "rapidly" on Monday, September 10, and is now a powerful Category 4 hurricane, USA forecasters said, as governors of 3 eastern U.S. states declared an emergency and told residents to prepare for the storm.

The NHC issued a warning Monday morning, explaining when powerful gusts may approach.

Hurricane Florence's top winds exploded to 130 miles (209 km) per hour, making it a Category 4 storm, just one-step short of the most severe level as it pushed westward toward the U.S. East Coast.

Though the NHC can't pinpoint with certainty the exact location and magnitude of the impacts, they said, "interests at the coast and inland from SC into the mid-Atlantic region should closely monitor the progress of Florence, ensure they have their hurricane plan in place, and follow any advice given by local officials".

Mr Cooper said he had asked Mr Trump to declare a federal state of emergency for North Carolina.

That's because Florence will reach areas that have already experienced a lot of rain in recent weeks - and it won't take much for flash floods to start in these regions.

These swells, already affecting Bermuda, "are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions", the NHC warned.

Nasa's satellites have been monitoring its strength and speed, as well as recording some incredible images of the massive storm.

Isaac is approaching the area and the certainty in it passing through the islands at hurricane strength remains, but its eventual path beyond the islands still remains relatively uncertain.

"The bottom line is that there is increasing confidence that Florence will be a large and extremely unsafe hurricane, regardless of its exact intensity, " Blake said.

Florence's strongest winds were measuring 85 miles per hour, with a possible landfall as a major hurricane happening Thursday.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for residents living along the entire SC coast. "Some gradual weakening is possible on Tuesday", the advisory says, "but Olivia will likely remain a threat to the Hawaiian Islands next week".

"I don't think many of us have ever been through a Category 4".
