Alibaba´s Ma says 1m United States jobs pledge thwarted by trade row

Ma met with U.S. President Donald Trump previous year in a high-profile meeting where he promised to create 1 million United States jobs linked to small merchants selling items on Alibaba platforms.

Ma said Alibaba could create "1 million jobs over the next five years by enabling 1 million American small businesses and farmers to sell usa goods to China and Asian consumers on the Alibaba platform".

"The promise was made on the premise of friendly US-China partnership and rational trade relations..."

On Wednesday Ma told Xinhua, a Chinese news site, "The current situation has already destroyed the original premise".

Ma, however, said Alibaba "will not stop working hard to contribute to the healthy development of China-US trade".

Ma also said that trade should be used as a tool for peace rather than a weapon.

In an interview with Chinese outlet Xinhua, Ma said recent back-and-forth tariffs between the United States and China made the pledge - which was heavily touted by Trump in the early days of the transition period - unworkable.

On Thursday, Ma said weakness in the economic outlook is "problematic" for the company.

Trump on Monday imposed 10 percent tariffs on about $200 billion worth of imports from China, and threatened duties on about $267 billion more if China retaliated against the U.S. action. "This thing will last long".

Donald Trump and Jack Ma met in NY in January 2017.

Chinese firms with factories in the United States would also face higher costs as they ship USA -assembled products back home.

"The U.S. like competition, China likes harmony, they're two different cultures", Ma said at an investor conference in Shanghai on Tuesday. Earlier on Tuesday, China had retaliated by slapping tariffs on Dollars 60 billion of American products and its state council announced that the new tariffs would be imposed at rates of 5% or 10%, depending upon the product from the same date.

Ma, the cofounder of Alibaba, announced in early September that he would step down from his role as chairman at the end of the year to focus on philanthropy.
