Why Newest Jimmy Butler Trade Rumor Could Be Good News For Celtics

Last season, Jimmy Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game for the Timberwolves.

Butler informed Tom Thibodeau he would prefer a trade and plans to leave in free agency. Butler wants out. And he isn't the only one, as Nick Wiggins (briefly with the Timberwolves in 2015 training camp) tweeted "Hallelujah" before deleting.

However, don't count out Kawhi's current team, the Raptors, out of the picture yet, as they're already doing everything they can in order to retain the two-time Defensive Player of the Year. We'll see if Butler is wearing a different jersey by then - and if Minnesota's drama spirals further out of control. Players signed this summer can't be traded until at least December 15 (and, in specific instances, January 15), which greatly reduces Minnesota's flexibility to make the best deal it can for one of the league's elite wing players.

The idea of creating a team to rival LeBron James in Los Angeles might be particularly appealing to both Butler and Leonard.

Butler, 29, was acquired from the Chicago Bulls on draft night in 2017 and was expected to play a key role in helping Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins turn the Wolves into a playoff team. The NBA has steadily moved away from the "emperor coach" model of having one man overseeing all aspects of the organization in recent years, and only two - Thibodeau and Gregg Popovich in San Antonio - remain in the league. But Cousins makes for an interesting case - LA doesn't have a solid center in their books right now, and would it be wrong to believe that if Golden State doesn't work out for Cousins, that he might take more money to join Butler in Los Angeles?
