Iran warns U.S., Israel of revenge after parade attack

Iranian boys hold images of one of the victims, 4-year-old Mohammad Taha Eghdami, during a public funeral ceremony for those killed in the attack in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz on September 24.

At least 25 people died including 12 members of the Revolutionary Guards.

All four attackers were killed.

Ethnic Arab separatists and the Islamic State group (IS) have issued competing claims that they carried out the attack, which was the deadliest in Iran in nearly a decade.

"Iran's answer (to this attack) is forthcoming within the framework of law and our national interests", said Mr Rouhani, adding that the U.S. would regret its "aggressiveness".

Officials and an eyewitness said the four gunmen who carried out the attack were clad in Iranian military uniforms and had sprayed the crowd with gunfire using weapons they had stashed in a nearby park.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the attack showed Iran has "a lot of enemies", according to remarks posted on his website, in which he linked the attackers to the U.S., Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Hossein Salami, deputy head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, blasted the U.S., promising "devastating" revenge.

Three Arab activists said that security forces, especially the intelligence branch of the Revolutionary Guards, had detained more activists in Ahvaz.

Mourners carried pictures of the dead along with banners reading "we will stand to the end" and "no to terrorism".

The US and Israel are complicit in the deadly shooting at the military parade in the city of Ahvaz that claimed dozens of lives, Hossein Salami, deputy head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), said live on state television.

Tasnim news agency quoted Salami as saying the "horrific crime" exposed the dark side of an alliance that the United States, Saudi Arabia and Israel had created to counter Iranian influence in the region.

The Islamic State group also claimed responsibility. "It is Americans who instigate them and provide them with necessary means to commit these crimes", Rouhani said before leaving for the U.N. General Assembly in NY. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday pointed blame at Arab separatists for the deadly attack and accused an unnamed US-backed Gulf state of supporting them.

It is, however, highly unlikely the Guards will strike any of its foes directly and risk setting off a regional conflict.

It also has steadily ramped up pressure on Iran to try to get it to stop what Washington calls "malign activities" in the region.

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi announced on Monday that the most of those persons behind the Saturday terrorist attack in Ahvaz have been arrested.

Accusations against Gulf countries will nearly certainly antagonise Iran's regional foe Saudi Arabia.

However, under the Trump administration, these relations have deteriorated further as the American leader pulled the United States out of a nuclear agreement that had been agreed to with Iran and other nations under his predecessor, President Barack Obama, and moved to reimpose sanctions on Tehran.
