Mark Judge's lawyer says he was interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation

The first woman to come forward with allegations against Mr Kavanaugh was psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford.

Mr Trump said he believed the judge would be confirmed. Kavanaugh has also denied her accusations as well as those of two other women, while accusing Democrats of a political "hit". Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is limited to a week and both Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have said that the Senate should vote on Kavanaugh this week.

A report released Tuesday by police in New Haven, Connecticut, says Kavanaugh was questioned after the 1985 incident, but wasn't arrested.

The FBI is expected to interview Judge Kavanaugh and some of the women who have accused him of sexual misconduct - including Prof Ford, who testified last week to the Senate Judiciary Committee. On Friday, Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona broke with his fellow Republicans and said that although he supported moving Kavanaugh's nomination out of the committee, he called for the FBI to investigate credible allegations against Kavanaugh.

Democrats, meanwhile, were raising new questions about the truthfulness of Kavanaugh's sworn testimony to the Senate, shifting tactics against President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee as they await the results of the FBI's background investigation. Kavanaugh has denied all allegations against him.

Concerns: Murkowski has been closely guarded about her opinions on Kavanaugh, but as one of the few Republican senators who supports abortion rights, how the judge might rule on abortion access and the future of the Affordable Care Act have been key issues for her.

That means if all the Democrats vote against Mr Kavanaugh, Trump could not afford to have more than one Republican oppose his nominee, with Vice President Mike Pence casting a tie-breaking vote.

Judge has denied Ford's allegations.

"I guess I want to say, 'Thank you, '" Walsh said. Ford identified Judge as a witness to the alleged assault.

It's not now clear whether the Republican leadership has secured enough votes to ensure Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Avenatti, who has said he is considering a Democratic run for the presidency in 2020, is also representing Stormy Daniels, the adult-film actress who was paid to remain silent about an alleged affair with President Trump.

George Hartmann, a spokesman for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), said it best.

"Wow! Just starting to hear the Democrats, who are only thinking Obstruct and Delay, are starting to put out the word that the "time" and "scope" of Federal Bureau of Investigation looking into Judge Kavanaugh and witnesses is not enough", the president tweeted.

The Republican senator at the center of the Supreme Court debate is vowing to make sure the FBI does "a real investigation" into President Donald Trump's nominee.

Supreme Court nominations require Senate confirmation. He said he did not want the probe to become a "witch hunt" and that it should be completed quickly.

Ms Heitkamp, meanwhile, noted that Mr Trump himself called for a "broader" FBI investigation into the allegations. Judge Kavanaugh's defenders counter that the accusations against him risk making the man a professional and social pariah.

"It's only one senator at a time, giving a speech", the Delaware Democrat said, noting that most of the rabble-rousing Americans see is indeed for a television audience, as the chamber usually contains a senator or two along with their aides. Senate Republicans have delayed votes on his confirmation while the FBI investigates the claims.

"The White House also could resist inquiries into new allegations, the people said".
