Chicago Cubs NL Wildcard: Loss proves what we knew all along

It was a problem that plagued them throughout the final stretch of the season, into game 163, and extended to tonight. They tied for the most wins in the National League through 162 games.

The Cubs fell to 6-3 in elimination games under Maddon.

Why? Because they absolutely blew it.

Freeland, meanwhile, allowed just one Cub to reach scoring position before leaving two outs into the seventh inning.

It was a bitter end for a team that made the NLCS the previous three years and won a World Series in 2016 that ended a drought dating to 1908.

This happened because the Cubs couldn't get the job done in their National League Central Tiebreaker against the Brewers on Monday.

The Rockies move on to face the Brewers in the best-of-five NLDS series, which begins at 3:07 p.m. Thursday in Milwaukee. Zobrist also played right field and left field in the game. After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Rockies then boarded a plane and traveled two time zones forward to Chicago for a must-win game the very next day. The batting order is full of top-tier Major League Baseball hitters for the Cubs, and yet they struggled mightily on offense at different times this year.

The stakes are much higher for Tuesday night's Wild Card Game as the loser of this playoff sees their season end. Colorado only scored one run through nine innings, thanks to a six-inning effort by Jon Lester followed by some outstanding relief pitching.

The hug struck Rockies manager Bud Black as interference. A simple base hit from Jason Heyward likely would've brought in two runs for Chicago, and that's all they would've needed.

He'll be welcomed by an experienced Cubs bunch that includes NL RBI leader Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo, who has been hitting just under.320 since June 26.

To add more misery to the Cubs' anemic offense, the team wasted an incredible outing from their starting pitcher.
