US, North Korea: South Korea Pushes for Compromise Deal

But Mr Pompeo did not meet Mr Kim on his last visit in July, when the North Korean leader instead was photographed touring a potato farm.

Pompeo was invited to visit Pyongyang this month during a September 26 meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho.

"The Koreas are technically at war; there has been no peace treaty since the Korean War started in the 1950s, so it's just governed by an armistice", Professor of Political Science David Rowe said. "Our policy has not changed".

In a commentary on Tuesday, North Korea's official KCNA news agency said declaring the end of the 1950-53 Korean War could "never be a bargaining chip" for denuclearization and said experts calling for North Korea to declare details of its arms programs were "spouting. rubbish".

Pompeo will open his trip on Saturday in Tokyo, where he will meet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has long championed a hard line on North Korea but recently said he was willing to meet Kim. The State Department announced afterward that the secretary had accepted Kim's invitation to visit Pyongyang.

In his speech at the UN General Assembly, Trump thanked Kim "for his courage and for the steps he has taken".

It is not clear yet whether the delegation will have a chance to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Pompeo, on a four-nation Asian trip from October 6 to 8 would also travel to Japan, South Korea and Beijing.

"We're not playing the time game", Trump told reporters September 26. Singapore was not among the possible locations, he said.

In order to build trust, North Korea, he said, appears to want "a transformation of the relationship, and the first step of that would have to be comprehensive sanctions relief".

On Saturday, Mr Trump lavished praise on Mr Kim - considered by human rights groups to be one of the world's most repressive leaders - and said they had fallen "in love" after an exchange of letters. "No really. He wrote me attractive letters". Stanford University scholars, including nuclear physicist Siegfried Hecker who visited North Korea's centrifuge facility at Nyongbyon in 2010, wrote earlier this year that North Korea is estimated to have a highly enriched uranium inventory of 250 to 500 kilograms (550 to 1,100 pounds), sufficient for 25 to 30 nuclear devices. Trump himself has said he is in no rush.

"There is nothing the USA could get from sanctions and it is no [one] other than them who will be put at disadvantage", the Rodong Sinmun, the official mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, said in an editorial.

"It looks like we'll have a second summit quite soon", he said.

Kazianis said Sunday's meeting between Pompeo and Kim could be a "make or break event" for U.S.
